Brooklyn
It is hard to believe that Brooklyn was once its own city, in fact, it was the second largest city in the nation, and Manhattan was the largest back a heaping handful of decades ago (in 1898 the boroughs were joined as one city)… Now Brooklyn is regaining its popularity and preserving its unique identity, and rather than being a secondary ‘burb, it is its own destination with a cultural, edible, architectural, musical, and social vibe all its own. I love weaving by the brownstones where Norman Mailer and Henry Miller once wrote, then reading Jonathan Lethem and visiting the Brooklyn Writer’s Space for a modern connection to the area’s literary bent.
Walking and biking are a must around Brooklyn, especially since you’ll have a better chance to hit upon one of the many impromptu events. Last trip I found a movie screening in front of one of the library branches, complete with a DJ spinning for intermission and biking maps and info for free from a side table…
